Loan Discharge

In certain situations, you may be eligible to have your loans discharged, which means you are released from the obligation to repay all or a portion of your loans. The table below lists the types of loan discharges that are currently available to Stafford and PLUS loan borrowers under both the Federal Family Education Loan Program and the Federal Direct Loan Program. Federal Perkins Loan borrowers may also be eligible for loan discharge due to School Closure or Total and Permanent Disability.

Each form includes the eligibility criteria for that type of discharge. Read the eligibility criteria carefully. If you think you may be eligible for loan discharge, contact your lender-servicer or OSAC for assistance. Perkins borrowers should contact the school(s) that administered their loans.

NOTE: Loans cannot be canceled solely because you did not complete the program of study at your school, didn’t like the school or the program of study, or didn’t obtain employment after completing the program of study.
