Deceased or Disabled Public Safety Officer Grant Program
Who is eligible to apply?
Applicants for awards must be the natural, adopted or stepchild of any public safety officer in Oregon, as defined by ORS 161.015(4) who, in the line of duty, was killed or so disabled, as determined by the Student Assistance Commission, that the income of the disabled peace officer is less than that earned by public safety officers performing duties comparable to those performed at the highest rank or grade attained by the disabled parent.
Eligible public safety officers include: (1) firefighters; (2) State Fire Marshal and the chief deputy fire marshal and deputy state fire marshals; (3) police chiefs and police officers; (4) sheriffs and deputy sheriffs; (5) county adult parole and probation officers; (6) correction officers; and (7) investigators of the Criminal Justice Division of the Department of Justice.
Applicants must be Oregon residents and must be enrolled or planning to enroll as a full-time undergraduate student.

This program is funded through the Oregon Opportunity Grant Program.

May the recipient attend college outside Oregon?
No. Recipients must attend an Oregon public college or university or an Oregon independent, private, non-profit college or university.

Is this award renewable?
Awards will be made on an annual basis. Awards may be received for a maximum of twelve quarters, or their equivalent, or until a baccalaureate is earned, whichever comes first.

What is the amount of the award?
At a public two- or four-year college or university in Oregon, the amount of the award is equal to the sum of tuition and fees. At an eligible Oregon private college, the award amount is equal to the sum of tuition and fees charged to students attending the University of Oregon.

Must the applicant file an application for financial aid?
Yes. Applicants must demonstrate financial need as determined by the Commission.

How do I apply?
Interested persons may apply by obtaining a Certification of Eligibility for the Disabled Peace Officer Scholarship from the Oregon Student Assistance Commission (OSAC). Submit the completed certification, with all transcripts, to OSAC. In addition, all applicants must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (the FAFSA), which is available at all high schools and colleges in Oregon.
