Common Myths

Before you decide about schools, you should be aware of common myths surrounding higher education.

Myth: “There is a perfect college for me.”
Truth: Never limit yourself to one college. With over 3,700 colleges and universities to choose from, you should be able to find several that meet your needs. Don’t expect to find one that is perfect.

Myth: “I need to decide on my career before I can choose a college.”
Truth: You should begin to formulate what you want to do, but college is a time of transition. You should be flexible with your options and career choices.

Myth: “I have to find a cheap college.”
Truth: The more expensive colleges actually have more financial aid available. Finances are important, but should not be the only factor involved in choosing a school.

Myth: “I don’t really need college.”
Truth: Even if you don’t know what your career will be, having a college degree vastly improves your chances of getting a job. College graduates also earn about 60% more than employees with high school diplomas.

Myth: “College will be too hard.”
Truth: College courses are more challenging than typical high school classes. The important thing is to learn how to study while in high school. This will increase your chances of success in college.

Myth: “I have to pay for college search services.”
Truth: DON’T! College search services that cost money are scams. Information can be easily accessed online or through your high school counselor.
