Knowing where to begin when preparing for college is often a complicated process. Even as a Junior there are many things that you can do to help prepare you for college.

September

Ask your school about dates, times and places for the October PSAT.
Check into what extracurricular activities are being offered for the year and decide what you would like to be involved with.
Meet with your counselor to review your courses for the year if you are unsure about college requirements.

October

Take the PSAT.
Continue to volunteer.
If you are interested in military academies start the application process now.

November

Review your grades and current classes. Work on your GPA.

December

Review the results of your PSAT. Meet with your counselor to determine how you might improve your skills for the SAT.

January

Sign up for the March SAT I.
Begin to think about what colleges you would like to attend. Think about size, cost, programs offered, location. These are all things that may help make your decision easier.

February

Prepare for the SAT I.
Write colleges and begin to request information.

March

Take the SAT I.
Sign up and begin to prepare for the April ACT or the May/June SAT II, if appropriate.
Talk to current students at the colleges that interest you to get an idea of what life is like on that campus.
Research scholarship information and see if there are any scholarships you can apply for as a junior.
Over Spring Break visit a college campus. Take a tour, talk to a professor and sit in on a class.

April

Take the Act if registered for it.
Meet with your counselor to select senior classes. Remember to make sure they meet college requirements and your academic plan and goals.
Attend a college fair to get more information.

May

Take the SAT II if registered.
Begin to think about which teachers and others you might ask to write your recommendations next fall.
Look into summer jobs.
Consider taking summer courses at a local college or community college.

June, July, and August

Take the SAT II if registered.
Talk with your counselor about your SAT/ACT scores.
Plan a visit to a college during the summer.
Write to colleges and send in requests for applications.
Visit a college campus. Take a tour.
Continue to research colleges.
Read and stay involved over the summer.
Consider volunteering.
Take a summer class.
